Obviously, when a film breaks into multiple subplots, one of them is bound to be weaker than the others and in this case the lot fell on Finn, but that isn't the same as saying Johnson dropped him.Īnd I do think that - with the exception of changing Rey's origin story - Abrams thought he was providing a follow-up to Johnson's film, not just with the Force-connection but also their ability to move objects through it, Poe becoming the leader of the Resistance, Hux - still as the comedic stooge - begrudging Kylo, etc. But he does give story material to Kylo, Rey, Poe and to Finn.
I think Rian Johnson did try paying-off things from The Force Awakens: the only thing he seems to have willingly dropped was Hux, whom he turned into a comedic stooge. I don't think that's what either filmmaker was going for. I don't think we're meant to read Finn's attachment to Rey in The Force Awakens as something that was to inevitably lead to romance. I think its very, VERY reductive to look at these films as revolving on a "will they/won't they" or a "who ends-up with whom." They're space operas, not soap operas.

TLJ went full Reylo, so TROS had to do that to (TFA was pretty clearly meant to set up Finn/Rey). I just watched The Fellowship of the Ring, and the first act of that trilogy ends not at the end of the movie but after the Council of Elrond. Like, if one tried to impose a three-act structure on the classic Star Wars trilogy, act one wouldn't equate to the first film, it would actually end about halfway into The Empire Strikes Back. If you look at a trilogy from the point of view of a three act structureīut trilogies don't divide into three acts neatly like that, partially because the three-act structure is, by definition, a short-long-short structure and yet movies within a trilogy tend to divide more or less into thirds.
Like, have these filmmakers never seen Gladiator, or a good Macbeth? Not every character story with a strong internal conflict needs to end with an unearned redemption arc. Yes, and ultimately he refused to take it and at the end of the film he orders "no quarter." Honestly, from the moment he murdered Han Solo he should have been beyond redmeption. The opportunity to escape Snoke presented itself. Your sense that he was manipulating events is just wildly offbase. The only consistent thread between the films is "Rey and Kylo have some weird connection", which was presumably intended to be just the dyad thing but then TLJ went full Reylo, so TROS had to do that to (TFA was pretty clearly meant to set up Finn/Rey). Look, TROS just did to TLJ what TLJ did to TFA so by no means is it overly clever, but the reason it isn't a "true game changer" and retrospectively doesn't seem overly interesting is because TROS did to TLJ what TLJ did to TFA. If you look at pre-TROS but post-TROS trailer theories, there was a sense that the title referred to the replacement of the Jedi system and instead the balancing of the force within users (probably called Skywalkers).
If you look at a trilogy from the point of view of a three act structure, you shouldn't end the second act with the hero/perspective resolved, that's the purpose of the third act. The broom thing is TLJ suggesting that the Force exists apart from Jedi-ness.
